Sphene is a very rare and brilliantly transparent gem. It can be found in colours that range from; yellowish green, green, orange, brown and in rarer cases black or even pink. This gemstone is also known as Titanite due to it high titanium content. Sphene derives from the Greek word ‘Sphen’ meaning ‘wedge’ which refers to its crystal structure that is typically wedge shaped. Another distinctive feature of Sphene is its double refractive properties, which splits light into two rays as it passes through the gemstone, resulting in the back facets to show as double images, giving the gem a soft crystal appearance.
